Last week we talked, sipped, and mingled among animals and royalty – that is, among Christie Lau’s decadent animal prints, and the 5STooGES’ witty re-imaginings of royal portraits, both of which have taken up residence at The Spoke Club for the next few weeks.
The show, entitled, “Deception,” opened on Wednesday evening.
Amid the candlelight and chatter of dinner-goers, bears, parrots, cheetahs, and wolves peer out from their various nooks and crannies on the 4th floor of the Spoke, enticing you to come have a closer look – and you should. Lau’s work is so intricate and detailed it requires some close attention; and the stories behind them, in which she explores human methods of survival and their parallels in the animal kingdom, are just as fascinating.
Proceed to the lower level and find yourself no longer in Lau’s jungle, but instead somewhere between a Warhol factory party, a Vienna Salon, and a Banksy alleyway. The brick walls and loft style windows are an ideal setting for the “street style” works of the 5 STooGES. Here, spray paint and satirical slogans adorn famous Old Master and Victorian paintings, garnering smiles and chuckles from the crowd.
“Deception” will be on view at The Spoke Club until the end of February.
If you can’t make it in person, be sure to check out the artists’ work here.
